Is your law practice working for you, or are you working for it?
This question was the subject of much discussions in yesterday's workshop on creating a Practice Process Playbook.
The surprising revelation: the role structured systems and workflows play in the success of a legal business.
Let me share a personal revelation.
When I started my legal practice, I didn't realize the importance of knowing my processes and systems. I was so much more focused on just getting money in the door!
One pandemic and two kids later, I now see the bigger picture.
Without systems and documented processes, I was mentally tracking countless details, constantly making the same decisions, and was constantly struggling to juggle my various responsibilities.
I used this experience to describe why a Practice Process Playbook - a visual guide outlining the key phases in your legal practice - is vital to:
- Eliminating decision fatigue that drains your creativity
- Creating consistent client experiences without additional effort
- Making delegation possible (even for "only you can do this" tasks)
- Protecting your personal time by creating clear boundaries.

Why Knowing Your Processes Is Vital For Remote Work
Another insight from the workshop: your Practice Process Playbook is also the difference between occasionally working remotely and building a genuinely remote-first practice.
In my experience, I've discovered that the most important systems weren't the complicated ones. They were the simple, repeatable processes that handled 80% of daily tasks.
A practice playbook addresses three core challenges of virtual practice:
- Consistency gaps: Without clear processes, quality varies depending on where you're working from
- Trust building: Remote client relationships require different trust signals than in-person meetings
- Team coordination: Even solo practitioners with virtual assistants struggle with remote collaboration
With these challenges addressed, I was better able to focus on the complex legal work I actually enjoy.
Our Next Workshops
Our learning journey is just beginning.
Join us for these upcoming "learn by doing" workshops:
- (Next Workshop) March 19. Building Digital Connections: Learn how to build meaningful client relationships through your digital presence. We'll explore how to use email automation to create communications connect authentically with your ideal clients. You'll leave with templates for client communications that save hours each week.
- April 2: Money Clarity: End the financial anxiety common among solo practitioners by learning (and designing) the systems vital to ensuring your practice is profitable.
- April 19: Building Your Practice Support System. Solo doesn't mean alone. Learn how to identify, hire, and effectively manage virtual support that extends your capabilities. We'll cover everything from crafting clear job descriptions to delegation essentials.
Each session builds on the last, creating a comprehensive roadmap for a practice that works for you instead of against you. And yes, we record everything so you can revisit the material whenever needed.
Freedom in your practice doesn't come from fewer commitments—it comes from better systems. The Practice Process Playbook is your path to practicing law on your terms, from anywhere.
Here's to building a practice that works for you, not against you.
